![]() Say, for example, that the Vikings had never been kicked out of England, and England (or part of it, anyways) were to this day considered a Nordic country (it wouldn't be completely out of the question geographically). That being the case, there's really no sense to restricting it to our modern perception of what that geographic entity should be since that perception is mostly historical accident. The rest of the de-jure Empires in the game are there to give the player something to do, and perhaps to represent possible entities that might've emerged had someone really conquered that much land. Other rulers might've been more powerful than them at given times, but they were generally not considered empires unless they could claim legitimacy of descent from a previous empire (which is why it was such a big deal in the ERE when Charlemagne was crowned emperor, or why, hundreds of years later, the first Ottoman sultan took the title of "Kaisir"). (I think one of the Spanish kings briefly styled himself as emperor, but that didn't last/wasn't really recognized). In the CK2 time-frame, probably the HRE, the ERE, and the Caliphate. The title of an "Empire" is questionable in the ancient world, the only two real emperors would've been in Rome and Persia, I think. Also, can you imagine the border gore? It would be terrifying. There'd be titular emperor's everywhere, since there wouldn't be any de jure land underneath them. I just think that from a game balancing perspective, it would create more problems than it solves if the game didn't implement the standards required for creating empires. It wouldn't make sense that I can invent a title by fusing both countries (who don't share any culture or even religion) together.Įdit: I understand that half of the empires in CK2 are just made up, and that the title Emperor is sort of made up too. If I become the king of half of Italy and the king of half of North Africa then that is exactly what I am, a double king. But it makes sense that in order to call yourself Emperor of a nation you need to own certain land. I was just being a bit facetious by using the Emperor of Britain title as an example. Instead of characters having to conquer preset de jure land in order to create a kingdom/empire Currently, /r/CrusaderKings is operating its seventh communal game.
